Project: Install a Backsplash

Whether you're a DIY newbie or an old hand, this project is sure to make a big splash in your house. Installing a backsplash is a great first-timer project, and it brightens boring, shadowy places in your kitchen or bath.
You don't have to be obsessive-compulsive to set tile ... but it doesn't hurt! Seriously, any careful DIYer can achieve great results with tile by using good planning, an eye for detail and the right tools. Three tips:
- Buy about 10 percent more tile than the space requires. You'll need it for off-cuts and for the inevitable mistake or two.
- If you mess up when cutting, save that tile; you might be able to use it in corners, which are often irregular.
- Before beginning, dry-fit a row of tiles to plan an efficient and balanced layout. Tile sheets with backing material (paper, fiberglass mesh or plastic dots) can vary in size more than single tiles.
